A Message from the Chief

Welcome to the Hudson Massachusetts Police Department’s website.  The Hudson Police Department employs 31 sworn full time police officers and 10 sworn part time officers who serve a community of 18,133 residents over 11.66 square miles.  Like so many other progressive law enforcement organizations, the Hudson Police Department employs agency-wide community policing philosophies and practices. As a result, we enjoy a strong relationship with the residents of the Town.  As part of our commitment to the concepts of Community Policing, the Department continually seeks ways to make its officers more effective in their patrols and allow them to increased contact with the people they serve.  To that end, some officers were redeployed from traditional cruiser assignments to more modern and effective means of patrol.

In the last few years, the Department added a number of bicycle patrols, using police officers that were specifically trained for theses duties.  In addition, the Department purchased a Harley Davidson motorcycle and added it to the patrol division.  A motorcycle officer is routinely used for traffic control, radar assignments and is assigned to assist with crowds at large gatherings.  Both of these patrol techniques have been well received by the residents of Hudson as well as the officers assigned to these duties.

The Department also added a School Resource Officer to our ranks this past September.  This officer is assigned full time to the local High School where he acts as a mentor to the students, provides security, and teaches classes related to law.  Early indicators suggest that this officer is already making a difference in the quality of the learning environment at the school.

When I took over as Chief of Police in 1998, I set a goal and made a commitment to the residents of the community that we would follow up on every lead and attempt to bring every case to a close.  At that time, I reorganized the Detective Division and initiated a practice that the Detectives maintain contact with the victims of crimes and keep them abreast of any progress made on any case that they were involved in.   The Detectives enthusiastically accepted this challenge and, as a result, we now close far more cases than we did just four years ago.  Equally as important, the victims are aware of what is happening with their cases, which keeps them a part of the process.

The tragic events of September 11th have caused us to concentrate our efforts on keeping our community safe from those who may wish to indiscriminately harm our citizens.  Training in this area is ongoing.  Our pledge to our residents is that we will avail ourselves of all the training and technology available.  We will do whatever is necessary to ensure your safety.  The Hudson Police Department is continually undergoing a self-assessment process.  We strive to improve our reputation in the community, the quality of work that we produce, and the image that we project in the performance of our duties.  We believe that the success we have enjoyed is a direct result of the healthy relationship that we have fostered with our residents.

I encourage you to contact me personally if you think I can be of any help to you or if you have any questions that you think I can assist you with.
